The 'De Groote Heide nature border park partnership' was formed in 2011 on the realisation that the area's individual municipalities (Cranendonck, Hamont-Achel, Heeze-Leende, Neerpelt and Valkenswaard) are too small to effectively establish a tourism policy. Cooperation is essential to raise awareness for the area as a tourist destination.

As of 1 January 2019, the municipalities of Neerpelt and Overpelt have merged into the single municipality of Pelt. This new municipality holds cooperation in equal high regard. And in September 2019 the municipality of Eindhoven also joined the collective. The main objective for Eindhoven is to strengthen the city-countryside connection, also as part of efforts to establish a good business climate for the dynamic Brainport region.
